Do you go to your local farmers market? Farm stands? Shop the "local" section of your grocery?
I take the girls to the farm stand every so often and then I wonder why I don't go weekly. The prices are better than the supermarket, the produce is very fresh - they even have eggs and honey.
My toddler who has suddenly become a very picky eater will try anything at the farm stand - veggies, fruit, etc...if it's in a basket she'll eat it. I grew up in a farming community and remember when you reall…

I've just launched a blog about what kids are learning about food in schools (and what they're eating, of course). Check it out at www.schoolfoodpolicy.com. I would appreciate all your comments and feedback about the site. I'm currently looking for contributors, so please let me know if you're interested in writing about your school food concerns and experiences!

Wandering the aisles of the supermarket, feeling drained and unoriginal, I scoured the shelves for something healthy and tasty but most importantly ORIGINAL. I finally fell upon a bag of whole wheat mini bagels, which themselves are not that original. Also not original was the whipped cream cheese I got a whole tub of right after. The fun part came when I went into the produce section and picked out a few different colors of bell peppers. With the addition of the raisins I had at home we hit on…

Some parents don't have the time or energy to pack a lunch for the kids everyday. A great alternative *should* be just buying a lunch at school. Unfortunately in too many cases these lunches are far from healthy. What can be done?
In many communities the parents have been heard and a new way of doing the school lunch has been started. Here in my county there is a program called Farm to School which essentially is an "eat local" program for the schools. Produce comes directly from local farms.…

These were a huge hit last week, melon, pineapple, grapes, strawberries and apples on wooden skewers...all the children at my son's birthday loved them....and the challenge of trying to eat the strawberry in the center first.

Today in the 4's class we made yogurt parfaits for snack time and it was a huge hit. The other grown ups told me it was the best snack the school had ever had. These are the comments I live and breathe for. It was so simple too, I was surprised no one else had thought of it yet! I found blueberries and raspberries on sale and started there. We put a few berries at the bottom of a small clear cup (presentation is everything, no?) then put on about a quarter cup of low fat vanilla yogurt and toppe…

I bought a Wilton miniature muffin pan at Michael's recently. I made Apple Raisin Mini Muffins from a Paula Deen recipe. In the end I had 60 mini muffins. I froze most of them, thawing out five or ten at a time for snacks, breakfasts or to go in my daughter's lunch. Sure, it took a while to bake them because I only have the one pan but I could do other things in the 15 minute increments and I had muffins for her breakfast or snacks for the last two months.
They thawed really well.
Apple Raisin…

I attempted to make graham crackers for the first time to be snack mom for the 2s class. They turned out really nicely, maybe a little crunchier than the kids were used to in a cookie/cracker so they were hesitant to really dig into them.
I used this recipe- http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/000126.html
I substituted graham flour for the pastry flour and I loved the heartier feeling.
I used animal cookie cutters to make them into fun shapes but discovered with the first batch that if you c…
